This is a series of Lake Simcoe near Jackson’s Point I hope to further pursue. Just like Monet did with the river Seine I hope to cover the same vantage point with different time and weather.

Table Rock, Fall colors

Oct 31, 2011 I decided to give myself another treat and do a digital sketch on top of Table Rock…

On election day, I decided to treat myself and go up for a hike on Table Rock in South Carolina. This is one of the more popular places to hike in the upstate, but on a Tuesday afternoon I found very few people. It’s a beautiful place but its a rigorous hike up as you seem to climb rocky step after rocky step. Unfortunately there is graffiti on the rocks but the hike does weed out the lazy vandals.

I did a water color sketch nearly 2 years earlier…

The Black River

The Black River leads out to lake Simcoe. This view is from the Briar’s golf course bridge. Normally I don’t do much landscapes of a golf course, but this was such a great fall day and the best view of the river. The only other view would be from a canoe…that is still pending. This landscape is rather clean in terms of natural debris and random elements found in more natural settings, so I decided to enhance the sterile and cultivated landscaping that goes with a meticulous kept golf course. You rarely see a stray leaf on the course or surrounding lawns.

Golfer’s Lane

This is a path that leads through the golf course to the main resort. I often jog,hike and walk through it all season. Fall is one short moment that you can capture the exciting change. I went out with water colors to sketch on location, then I decided to try a digital painting based on the raw colors I captured a few weeks ago. There something about standing in one place for an hour to absorb all the environment, light and color as opposed to taking a quick photograph. The eye is still the best camera out there and I think I did a decent job in preserving that freshness in the final version.

Briar’s lookout tower

The Briars is a nice country side resort. I’ve been up in the tower several times and you get a great view of the lake. This time I decided to draw it from under a tree…unfortunately I started getting these little bugs crawling all over me so I decided to make this a quick study. The tower itself is a little top heavy…I’d prefer a slender bell tower look. It almost needs a big coocoo clock or like in Germany where you have a wooden guy in leiderhosen coming out to knock the bell with a mallet.

Fall continues

Fall comes quickly in Ontario but when it does the colors are crisp and clear. The weather has been forgiving these past few days and it only reminds you of what is coming. So I embrace these nice sunny days as Winter’s monotony is only a few weeks away.

Fall in Sutton, Ontario

These are done with prismacolor pencils and a ink pen. I learned how to draw real small from a designer who worked on Animation features. He would do these incredible detailed but very small color thumb designs. Then they would be shipped to a back ground painter who would translate his thumbs into full production paintings. I realized that you can get a lot of color and light info within small compositions. It allows you to get the fleeting light especially during times of dusk and dawn. My only challenge is doing justice to the real world of fall colors. You never can never match the real vivid colors of nature this time of year.

Fall colors in Asheville and Blue Ridge Parkway

The transition from Summer to Fall is bitter sweet, but up in the Blue Ridge you can see the transition much longer as Fall takes its sweet time reaching the valley in this part of the North America.

Chatooga

This river is a little spooky in it’s beauty. The Chatooga borders Georgia, North Carolina and the very north west corner of South Carolina. I like to visit it in the winter as there are little to no people and you have the water all to yourself. At the same time, you feel isolated and very lonely.
