Going out for another late kayak trip to capture the sunset. The water was calm and it was still a very nice warm day to be out on the water. Unfortunately I didn’t bring my spray skirt and after being distracted from sketching the sunset the winds picked up and I ended up paddling against some serious head winds. The waves splashed into the kayak and with not much light I started to think my kayak wouldn’t make it back to shore. Sometimes I paddle out to the deeper part of the lake to get a different view of the shore but Lake Simcoe is a very big lake and the weather can change very quickly. I should have known the evening winds can come in pretty fast and so it would have been smarter to stay closer to shore where there is less wind. Nonetheless, you need to respect mother nature and next time I’ll be sure to have my spray skirt with me if I decide to wander out too far.

The last of the kayaking on a nice warm evening to a harvest moon. It also marks the end of Summer and the beginning of the Fall Equinox.

The last days of summer and so an attempt to capture the last of the summer light.
A heron who managed to stand still enough for a portrait…
The lake just before sunset…

Another dusk trip out on the kayak. This is at approx 7:35pm
Looking east towards Turtle Island around 6:45pm
It is fun to paint while in the kayak, but when you need a steady hand to keep the horizontal lines straight it’s very tricky and can be frustrating when you are trying to add the delicate final touches. Nonetheless, it’s a great experience and I love sitting back at night when everything on the water is so calm and a warm breeze hits you. This will probably be the last of the summer night paddles unless the harvest moon presents another chance, but only if it’s warm as night can be quite cold for both air and water temps.

I got into my kayak and went out for full moon paddle. The weather was perfect and the water was clear of traffic. The moon made it more than bright enough to navigate and I managed to even see a shooting star. It would probably be worth my while to go on a new moon where I can see more stars but virtually impossible to sketch or paint anything without a headlamp. These pics were made with just the dusk and moonlight but I still had to struggle finding the right amount of color and saturation. I took a sharpie with me so I could just ink in the tree line and not worry about washing over it with pigment. It was a great night and I will be sure to get out there for a harvest moon.

The day started out nice but clouds rolled in and soon the rain started. That’s not so good while you are painting with water colors so I had to zip things up in a baggie and kayak under the willow. I don’t mind overcast days as the clouds are interesting and gives you a chance to explore more subtle tones and hues.

July has come and now the weather is starting to finally feel like summer.

I have been sketching watercolors in my Kayak since last fall and enjoy the low horizon line perspective it gives you. The temps have been very nice and so it was good to get out before all the crazy summer boaters tear up the water.

I finally managed to scan in some original water colors. This one I just did from my kayak on the Black River. I have more of these sketches I will share when I have time to scan them.
