My first time to the Haida Gwaii Islands and I am very excited as I have always been attracted to the art and culture of the Pacific North West Natives and the Haida are world famous for their carvings. The Island has everything condensed into a small area considering the mountains, beaches, rain forests and culture.

One of those rare warm days in late fall. I usually don’t have these type of opportunities this time of year, but with the short days and a nice mix of clouds and blue sky it was a moment to get out and try to get one more dusk before winter.

I did finally manage to get my scanner up and running and my first sketch of Lake Hartwell of 2015!
Unlike Simcoe, Hartwell is a man made lake and is like a huge spider web with endless coves and nooks, where Simcoe is a big open circle. The clay subsoil is a bright orange and the water a bright green so it creates some wonderful contrasts. Kayaking down here is equally interesting as there many quiet spots to reflect and draw. This was a very quick sketch and I had forgotten my brushes, so I improvised and did finger painting and went home to add addition line detail with a brush. It’s a very small sketch and the winter down here is rather mild so I will go back and do more studies at this location.

This is probably the last of the days that the temps will be above freezing so I went out to get the last few opportunities. Next week I’ll be back down south. Weather this time of year tends to get very overcast and colors tend to fade and become desaturated. Growing up in the Great Lakes region, the winter can be quite monotonous and you have to really push yourself visually. This is the bridge on the Briar’s golf course and the forest is a lot next to some rental cabins near the 18th fairway. Sometimes it is important to try to capture all types of scenery and some may lack the drama of a sunset or even water, but just getting out and being in the moment you have to find interest and practice technique regardless of the ultimate outcome.

A rare day when the clouds broke and the sun setting on a mild winter day.

A thunderstorm was moving in and I tried to get a quick sketch of the on coming clouds…a fast mix of sun and shade made it tricky to get the right scheme…

One of the rare times I get to paint a fruit tree in full bloom. The flowers only last a few days and then they blow off.
