My first time to the Haida Gwaii Islands and I am very excited as I have always been attracted to the art and culture of the Pacific North West Natives and the Haida are world famous for their carvings.  The Island has everything condensed into a small area considering the mountains, beaches, rain forests and culture.

Dec 28 above freezing

This is probably the last of the days that the temps will be above freezing so I went out to get the last few opportunities.  Next week I’ll be back down south. Weather this time of year tends to get very overcast and colors tend to fade and become desaturated.  Growing up in the Great Lakes region, the winter can be quite monotonous and you have to really push yourself visually.  This is the bridge on the Briar’s golf course and the forest is a lot next to some rental cabins near the 18th fairway.  Sometimes it is important to try to capture all types of scenery and some may lack the drama of a sunset or even water, but just getting out and being in the moment you have to find interest and practice technique regardless of the ultimate outcome.

Lake Simcoe July 28th

It has been a long time since I pulled out the Ipad, but the clouds were something I felt were better captured in softer tones as well when working light on dark on this interesting contrast of weather.  Water colors can achieve some level of softness but it’s much harder when trying to get contrasting values.  At one point I will get back to oil sketching, but the materials and resources can be a burden when I travel a lot.

Lake Simcoe April Ice

The last of the ice is slowly melting but it has still cling on and is so thin and has a dark matte finish to the reflective light color of the water.  Birds have migrated back in waves and it is a welcome site.  Soon I will be back kayaking on the open water.

Cape Canaveral National Sea Shore is a great place to see all the natural wild life in a huge area preserved from all the massive development that exists around most of Florida’s coast line.

Viero, Florida has a smaller sanctuary but just as impressive with the diversity of wildlife and protected waters…

Hammock State Park, Florida

Hammock State Park is located about an hour east of the gulf cost.  Its seclusion makes it a great place to see a habitat that is a true reflection of what Florida was like before the 1600’s.  The live Oak with Spanish moss is a contrast as I sketched it in the middle of the cattle and orange fields that dominate much of the interior of the state.  The park has nice hiking trails and a board walk to experience the Cypress in the swamps.  The roads have a dedicated bike and walking paths and there is a museum dedicated to the Civilian Corps that created all these great parks across the US.

Oaks may be the king of the forest, but their leaves just seem to turn brown.  They do seem to last the longest, but brown is not as exciting as red, yellow or even purple maples.

Sunsets are always the toughest to capture on site as the light diminishes to a point where you have no more references and you end up in the dark.  The first one started and I had to quickly flip the paper over and try to do a more expressive and abstract representation.  At one point, you take it home and use them for future references, but ultimately you can never recreate an experience you get being on site.
