My first time to the Haida Gwaii Islands and I am very excited as I have always been attracted to the art and culture of the Pacific North West Natives and the Haida are world famous for their carvings. The Island has everything condensed into a small area considering the mountains, beaches, rain forests and culture.

Three great Piedmont Blues Guitarists, Steve McGaha, Bob Buckingham and Hunter Holmes.
This is where I was inspired to learn finger style country blues playing. Steve is a great teacher and this trio does a great job telling stories and history about the original songs and the musicians that created such a great original American music.

Theatre sketching is always a treat and it can be quite a challenge to draw in the dark. I love the performances and being in the moment trying to capture personalities and character with loose expressive gesture. Eurydice is a play based on the wife of Orpheus and her perspective.

City Hall, looks like an art deco space ship. I wonder if one day all the creative types will come aboard and it will launch off into the cosmos, leaving Asheville a cultural wasteland.
This is near Vance Square, and I love the activity of people, places and musicians. The long light, makes it an ideal for street artists and musicians to perform. This is the best meeting place and there seems like all type of people have rendezvous here.
Guitarist plays amidst the hustle and bustle. Street people also patronize the location and they are eager to busk for money with less talent. The 4th panel is a Dulcimer player in the Grove Park Arcade. He was listed as a luthier and a cosmic new age spiritual performer. His playing was no doubt celestial and uplifting. His performance was between a drum, piano, and guitar.

It has turned into a green Christmas, but that has allowed me to go out with water colors and do some sketching. The mist did create some issues with keeping my colors on the paper as they started to wash off, but it’s a great time to capture the affinity and subtle tones of a warm Christmas.

It has been a long time since I pulled out the Ipad, but the clouds were something I felt were better captured in softer tones as well when working light on dark on this interesting contrast of weather. Water colors can achieve some level of softness but it’s much harder when trying to get contrasting values. At one point I will get back to oil sketching, but the materials and resources can be a burden when I travel a lot.

the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Shore is a treasure and quite an experience. I have been to the Oregon Dunes National Park as well and both have unique experiences in hiking up massive dunes with a great big blue of water in the distance. The one major difference is Lake Michigan is fresh water and the dunes were much more difficult to hike. I also enjoy the fact there were no dune buggies allowed unlike Oregon where it can spoil the solitude and natural wonder of the shore.

This is no doubt my favorite time of year when the Trillium come up. This winter has been rather cold and brutal, but that has not stopped these wonderful flowers from popping up and blooming on time. I will try to get out and paint them as much as possible before the mosquitos have their way.

The snow has not fully melted but the temps are finally above freezing so I had some time to capture the transition. The colors are still muted and fall like, but the light is much brighter, if that makes any sense.
