Another fall sketch of Golfers Lane.  This one is similar to the winter sketch I did a few years ago…

16 Mile Creek, Oakville Ontario

Oakville has some nice local trails and 16 mile creek is a great place to explore within the city limits.  The creek cuts through some deep cliffs and you can get a great view from the top or bottom.  At times you feel that you are in some remote area and not a suburb of Toronto.  This time of year is particularly great as there are a lot of maples and oaks that are big and have great color.  I used to live next to this trail and enjoyed the times spent hiking around the entire perimeter.

Trees, early evening

There are some great trees near lake Simcoe and just around the corner I have some nice subjects.  Willows are very hard to capture as they are very subtle and full of graceful sweeping leaves, so I was struggling trying just to do it justice let alone capturing the sweet late afternoon light.  Water color techniques are also tricky as you want to get the soft curves but things harden up pretty quickly.  Oil painting is probably a better medium for this type of tree, but I wanted to make the attempt.

White Pines are so awesome in terms of scale and figure as they bend and twist in such unique ways.  I guess this is why Tom Thompson devoted his life to painting them in Northern Ontario.  When the sun sets, these pines still capture the sweet orange light as the deep blue and purple shadows creep up from the ground.  I will continue to try to explore the many shapes, light and atmosphere these great trees possess.

Lake Simcoe, Late Sept Dusk

Going out for another late kayak trip to capture the sunset.  The water was calm and it was still a very nice warm day to be out on the water.  Unfortunately I didn’t bring my spray skirt and after being distracted from sketching the sunset the winds picked up and I ended up paddling against some serious head winds.  The waves splashed into the kayak and with not much light I started to think my kayak wouldn’t make it back to shore.  Sometimes I paddle out to the deeper part of the lake to get a different view of the shore but Lake Simcoe is a very big lake and the weather can change very quickly.  I should have known the evening winds can come in pretty fast and so it would have been smarter to stay closer to shore where there is less wind.  Nonetheless, you need to respect mother nature and next time I’ll be sure to have my spray skirt with me if I decide to wander out too far.

Windy day on Lake Simcoe

It was a very windy day and the waves were active.  I tried to get the clouds as billowy as best I could but water colors  don’t handle subtle whites all that well.  It’s more of a subtractive medium where the lightest aspect of your composition is best left alone and you work around that.  But clouds have amazing subtle blues, purples and yellows and I find that oils or digital medium are better as you can add hues and values as well as feather and soften edges.  Water colors can only soften when the paper is wet but soon afterwards things harden up.  When you transfer, scan or photograph the original some the subtle strokes get lost and the image gets flattened.

I had fun with this one as there was a lot of action in the sky.  I will start to focus on the twilight aspects soon but it’s hard to decide when to wait and when to engage.  This is the most dramatic time of the day and you only have minutes to get the moment.  I will have to bring 4 or 5 cards next time so I can just keep going.  Bringing only one or two can limit your opportunities as you don’t want to “over work” one composition which is something I’m always doing.  Sunsets start with some nice intense yellows, but then progress to orange and then about 30 seconds of this incredible bright red that I can never seem to capture.  Finally after that is all done, there is some nice subtle reds, purples and blacks that linger, and so this is why I need to plan ahead next time.  Of course, sometimes the clouds and sun don’t always cooperate, as there are times the sun gets covered up too soon and everything turns into a dull shade of blues and there are other times where the sun breaks through at the last minute and all the clouds blaze.  Then the water is something you need to focus on as well as it reflects the mood of the sky.  Wind helps as it creates just one or two tones, but if it’s clear and still out, then you are forced to paint reflections and takes time to try to put in the right amount of ripple, reflection and clouds in that water.  At the end of the day, you have to walk away and try not to look at the paintings until the next day as you are always discouraged on the spot when comparing your work to Mother Nature, but then the next day you are grateful for such an experience as it always motivates you for another sunset experience.

I normally just do natural landscapes, but I like the Greek statue at the Briars and will like to go back and use it as a theme for future sketches.

Black River, summer clouds and rain

The day started out nice but clouds rolled in and soon the rain started.  That’s not so good while you are painting with water colors so I had to zip things up in a baggie and kayak under the willow.  I don’t mind overcast days as the clouds are interesting and gives you a chance to explore more subtle tones and hues.
