Table Rock

Winter is much different in South Carolina than it is in Ontario. The sky seems bluer and the light is clear. But this day it was unseasonably cold and you can see the ice fall on the side of the mountain. But there is little to no snow and so you have more browns and yellows to deal with. I like both climates and tend to enjoy painting snow with all the different values of blue and white. Table Rock is a great place to hike and explore, but it’s one of the most strenuous hike to the top. I’ve lived on the west coast and have hiked some big mountains, but Table Rock is almost a vertical hike from the beginning. I did some fall sketches on top of it and will continue to capture this great place all season.

This is a digital painting from a road I take from Lake Simcoe down to Newmarket Ontario. This is the first attempt at taking my computer with me to a location. I had to paint in my car as the temp. was below freezing. The computer battery lasts only about an hour so I had to be quick. I came home and added more details. I love winter painting as the snow and light play off real well with blue and yellow.
First Snowfall

The first snow is always exciting. This is our first snow in Sutton, Ontario. This is our front lawn, and I hope to do another version of the back. The Briars is next door and there are a lot of opportunity to capture snowscapes near lake Simcoe. It’s not even winter yet, but there will be plenty of opportunities to capture the snow in Ontario.

The Grove Park Inn is a wonderful escape. Located on top of Asheville it was built in the early 1900’s and has seen multiple U.S. presidents and celebrities visit. I love the big fire places that bookend the cozy and spacious lobby. I tend to spend entire Sundays there as they sell the NY times.

I did these sketches in Greenville SC, at the Reedy River park. There’s something fresh and energizing when you do fast gestural sketches. There’s no thought or time to spend on values and detail. The important thing is to capture the vitality and force of the character. Hopefully you are able to evoke energy and what will happen next.

My good friend Bill and I went on a late summer kayak trip to the northern most tip of lake Jocassee. This man made lake seems very natural and full of wonders. Last year we saw a black bear on the shore while paddeling back.
Monticello and UVA

I always wanted to visit Monticello ever since I saw it on the back of the nickel. Jefferson has facinated me when I studied the Lewis and Clark expedition. I didn’t realize how much the third president has contributed to this country…good and bad. Monticello was a paradox in that it celebrated the rational and scientific man, but at the same time was run by slave labor. Jefferson ultimately fell on hard economic times and his entire estate was lost to bankruptcy. Along with his farm, Jefferson designed the University of Virginia campus and it is a true gem of neo classical architecture.
Ottawa in July

Ottawa is a nice blend of architecture, nature and size. It’s not a big imposing capital like Washington or London, but it’s not your typical bland non descript one as well. Parliment Hill is a hybrid of English and French style of neo gothic and normand influences. I usually attend the animation festival in October, but this year Ann and I went there in the summer.

Montreal is a city within a city. You have very old right next to a modern urban center. Language aside, it is not unlike most major cities in North America. Unfortunately the only thing that is a real drag is the weather. In late May you can still see flurries.

Toronto Old and New
June 4, 2009 at 9:26 am | In architecture, canada, ontario, toronto | Leave a CommentToronto is a city that you cannot capture with just one image. Sure the CN Tower is probably the most pictured image of the city, but there’s a great mix of old and mostly new architecture in the city. I particularly like the U of T area of the city where you get a great mix of people and place.
