ON_Briars_May02_2013

The first digital sketch of spring and I tried to capture the trillium that start to emerge in early May.  I love this time of year as there are no bugs yet so you can sit in the woods and actually sketch something.

Here’s a video capture of the sketch that took about an hour and a half to draw and 2 minutes in time lapse…

Most of my sketches of Lake Simcoe are looking west towards Jackson’s Pt, but this one is looking east with a wonderful Cedar tree in the foreground.  I often prefer natural landscapes over manicured ones, but this Cedar has been trimmed nicely to show off the interesting trunk shape.  The west view also has several islands in the distance but I decided to focus on this tree for now.  In March I will revisit and see if there is still ice or snow but for now it’s been too cold and wet to use the Ipad and even the watercolors are freezing up too quickly to get anything done on location.

The Black River

The Black River leads out to lake Simcoe.  This view is from the Briar’s golf course bridge.  Normally I don’t do much landscapes of a golf course, but this was such a great fall day and the best view of the river.  The only other view would be from a canoe…that is still pending.  This landscape is rather clean in terms of natural debris and random elements found in more natural settings, so I decided to enhance the sterile and cultivated landscaping that goes with a meticulous kept golf course.  You rarely see a stray leaf on the course or surrounding lawns.

This is a path that leads through the golf course to the main resort.  I often jog, hike and walk through it all season.  Fall is one short moment that you can capture the exciting change.  I went out with water colors to sketch on location, then I decided to try a digital painting based on the raw colors I captured a few weeks ago.  There something about standing in one place for an hour to absorb all the environment, light and color as opposed to taking a quick photograph.  The eye is still the best camera out there and I think I did a decent job in preserving that freshness in the final version.

Table Rock

Winter is much different in South Carolina than it is in Ontario.  The sky seems bluer and the light is clear.  But this day it was unseasonably cold and you can see the ice fall on the side of the mountain.  But there is little to no snow and so you have more browns and yellows to deal with.  I like both climates and tend to enjoy painting snow with all the different values of blue and white.  Table Rock is a great place to hike and explore, but it’s one of the most strenuous hike to the top.  I’ve lived on the west coast and have hiked some big mountains, but Table Rock is almost a vertical hike from the beginning.  I did some fall sketches on top of it and will continue to capture this great place all season.

This is a digital painting from a road I take from Lake Simcoe down to Newmarket Ontario.  This is the first attempt at taking my computer with me to a location.  I had to paint in my car as the temp. was below freezing.  The computer battery lasts only about an hour so I had to be quick.  I came home and added more details.  I love winter painting as the snow and light play off real well with blue and yellow.

sutton snow

The first snow is always exciting.  This is our first snow in Sutton, Ontario.  This is our front lawn, and I hope to do another version of the back.  The Briars is next door and there are a lot of opportunity to capture snowscapes near lake Simcoe.  It’s not even winter yet, but there will be plenty of opportunities to capture the snow in Ontario.
