It has turned into a green Christmas, but that has allowed me to go out with water colors and do some sketching. The mist did create some issues with keeping my colors on the paper as they started to wash off, but it’s a great time to capture the affinity and subtle tones of a warm Christmas.

It’s been a while but I have been painting just not been scanning my work of late. I will be scanning my fall pics of Upstate South Carolina soon as they are some of my favorite images of the year.
I did managed to scan recent paintings of Lake Simcoe during the shortest days of the year.

Lake Simcoe July 28th

It has been a long time since I pulled out the Ipad, but the clouds were something I felt were better captured in softer tones as well when working light on dark on this interesting contrast of weather. Water colors can achieve some level of softness but it’s much harder when trying to get contrasting values. At one point I will get back to oil sketching, but the materials and resources can be a burden when I travel a lot.

A thunderstorm was moving in and I tried to get a quick sketch of the on coming clouds…a fast mix of sun and shade made it tricky to get the right scheme…

One of the rare times I get to paint a fruit tree in full bloom. The flowers only last a few days and then they blow off.

Spring has started to fill in the trees.
Here’s a little further down on the river…
May Trillium 2

A closer sketch of the Trillium before they wither. Unfortunately the scan loses a lot of the subtle shades and details of the flowers.

The ice still has not melted and it was still quite chilly sketching, but it is very interesting to try to capture this slow transition.
Ice Flow, Lake Simcoe

The strong north winds blew a lot of the thin ice onto the shores making it look quite dramatic. Upon closer look it looks more like pure white slush perfect for an Italian Ice if it wasn’t full of dirt and what not from the long winter.
April Season

The snow has not fully melted but the temps are finally above freezing so I had some time to capture the transition. The colors are still muted and fall like, but the light is much brighter, if that makes any sense.
